Roland Corporation debuted their JC-120 Jazz Chorus amplifier in 1975 and it’s been a mainstay for musicians ever since. It was a deviation from the popular tubes amps of the time, like Fenders and Marshalls, which have natural tube overdrive and warmth. The Jazz Chorus was a solidstate amp, was very loud, and sounded crystal clear. So some musicians passed over them for a preference of traditional tube amp tones, but others found it useful to run with effect pedals or just clean headroom and volume.
But the big innovation was the world’s first chorus effect. They called it “Dimensional Space Chorus” and it was produced by having two speakers, one running a direct tone, and the other having periodic pitch modulation. This created a thick ambience and atmospheric texture to your signal.
There’s of course many heavyweight musicians that have used a Jazz Chorus to broadcast their art and agenda. JC players span the gamut of genres, including but not limited to…(deep breathe) new wave, synth-pop, punk, jazz, prog, hard rock, yacht rock, heavy metal and thrash metal.
